Henry Winkler didn’t read a book until he was 31

Posted on March 7, 2025 By author

Henry Winkler’s journey to success was marked by early struggles in school, where he faced harsh criticism from his parents who mistook his learning difficulties for laziness. Despite his best efforts, he found academics nearly impossible, leading to years of punishment and self-doubt. It wasn’t until adulthood, after watching his stepson struggle in school, that he discovered he had dyslexia. This realization was both a relief and a source of frustration, as it meant years of scolding and low self-esteem had been unnecessary. However, instead of dwelling on the past, Winkler used his diagnosis to inspire children facing similar challenges, writing a beloved book series about a dyslexic boy named Hank Zipzer.

Though reading scripts remained a challenge throughout his acting career, Winkler persevered by improvising and relying on memorization. His portrayal of Fonzie on Happy Days made him a household name, yet his proudest achievement remains his work as an author, encouraging children to believe in themselves regardless of their learning struggles. Now a celebrated actor, writer, and advocate, Winkler continues to inspire with his message that learning challenges do not define a person’s potential. His upcoming memoir, set for release in 2024, will further share his journey of resilience, proving that success is possible despite early setbacks.
